BASS Chamonix Ski School

BASS Kids Rock Junior Off Piste Adventure, Chamonix 2017

BASS Kids Rock on Grands Montets, Chamonix

6 very lucky kids got to experience our first Junior Off Piste Adventure in Chamonix this year.  All the kids have been skiing regularly with us in groups or private lessons from an early age (some from 3 years old) and they have now developed  together as one group to experience what other adventures skiing can offer them.

Coach - Shona Tate                   UIAGM Mountain Guide - Pete Mason

Shona Tate, BASS Chamonix Ski Instructor                                      Pete Mason, BASS Chamonix Mountain Guide

DAY 1

Les Houches - A warm up day spent at Les Houches getting acclimatized and making sure everyone's equipment was operational.

The group got to know each other and started building confidence in each other's skills in the off piste.  "Guide Rules" of slowing down and stopping safely above the Coach/Guide when in off piste terrain.

DAY 2

Grands Montets - A real technical Off Piste day using the gullies under the Tabé Chairlift to improve skills of skidding, slowing down, turning in narrow corridors & gullies, navigating bumpy terrain, skiing safely as a group and looking after each other in that environment.

And adventure into the forest to learning about Safety Kit (transceiver/shovel/probe), the varying equipment and manufacturers, checking everyones transceiver was working properly and using it in practice situation to find another transceiver.

DAY 3

BASS Chamonix kids in Magic Forest

Grands Montets - Further skiing skills practice using various terrain to achieve goals. Skiing the Magic Forest down to the Lavancher Bowl and the bottom of the Retour Pendant chairlift.  Followed by a test in the Arva Park, (transceiver training park) beside Lognan, to find and deactivate the hidden beacons.  A good training day all round.

DAY 4

Grands Montets - Full day out with our Mountain Guide, Pete.  Fantastic conditions for a glacier trip up the top.  Harnesses fitted in the morning, as this is essential kit for glacier travel, in case of emergencies.  What an amazing day, with Pete, learning the names of the surrounding mountains and glaciers that can be seen from the viewing platform at the top of Grands Montets Cable Car.

DAY 5

Le Tour - Different location, different terrain, different snow.  Dealing with the changing snow conditions but we did find some fresh snow over the back using L'Aiguillette poma to access the Aiguillettes des Posettes ridge.  Another forest conquered!  We also found the best ever hot chocolate with cream at the railway station in Vallorcine.
